Newborn Care 101 Workshop

Did you know that newborns have two openings in there skull at birth?
They are called soft spots or fontanels. One is at the top of the head and one at the back. They are covered with a tough membrane and will fuse together within a year. They allow the head to adjust as it travels through the birth canal and allows space for the rapid growth of the brain during the first year.

Did you know that newborns only know how to breathe through their noses?
All babies have mucous. When you hear your newborn sneeze it is only their natural mechanism to try to clear their nasal passages so they can breathe.

Did you know that newborns should be gaining ½ ounce to 1 ounce per day during the first 6 weeks?
To receive the amount of calories they need they will be eating about every 2 ½ to 3 hours. It is suggested they should not go more than 4 hours between feedings for the first few weeks.
